Stippling

One of the most basic techniques used with stamping is stippling which is a technique to apply ink to paper using a stippling brush

load the brush with ink and gently pounce it vertically one the paper. This will give a soft muted effect. Continue to laod the brush and pounce, concentrating more in some areas than in others.

Multiple colors can be used to layer and give the illusion of depth, or you can stipple with the same color as the stamped image. Don't be afraid to play with this technique as you can get a very different range of looks depending on the angle you hold your brush at and the mix of colors you use

Aged Paper

Using a peice of sponge and three coordinating inks, you can create the look of old paper that has been aged and burnt at the edges. Very easy and quick to do and don't worry about being precise.

I find that these three colors work best to give the most authentic look.
Using a piece of sponge, work from lightest to darkest colors.
load some vintage photo onto your sponge and shade the paper around the edges and further into the paper as shown on the first picture.

Then add some walnut ink to the same sponge and shade the paper around the edges, only this time, don't shade to far into the center

.

Now, using the direct to paper technique, run the black ink along the edge of the paper.

Finally, take the sponge and lightly rub the black ink inward so that it feathers across the paper in spots.

You can use this technique with any colors, just remeber to always go from lightest to darkest.
